Wisdom tooth pain is one dental problem you should not ignore, so we make it a priority to see you quickly. Our dentists have been part of the Danforth community for years and have performed many wisdom tooth extractions here in Toronto. If your wisdom teeth are impacted or causing discomfort as they come in, book a consultation. We will assess them with a digital X-ray and explain your options for removal.
Wisdom teeth are not the only teeth that sometimes need to come out. Severe decay, advanced gum disease, or a fracture from an injury can also leave extraction as the best option. In most cases we try to save a tooth first with a filling, crown, or root canal, and we treat removal as a last resort. You can read more on our tooth extractions page.
An impacted wisdom tooth occurs when there is not enough room for it to emerge properly, leaving it trapped beneath the gum line. If left untreated, it can lead to infection, damage to neighbouring teeth, and persistent jaw pain. At Pape Dental Centre on Danforth, our dentists have years of experience diagnosing and treating all types of impacted wisdom teeth. We use digital X-rays to assess the position of your tooth and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your situation. You receive safe and effective care close to home.

Wisdom tooth removal calls for a dental team you can trust. Pape Dental Centre has been a trusted part of the Danforth community for years. Our team has served families and individuals across Toronto’s east end with the latest technology. Our dentists listen to you and explain every step of the procedure so you feel comfortable. Our warm environment makes every visit feel less like a clinical appointment and more like care from someone who knows your neighbourhood.
If you study at one of the downtown universities, our office is a short ride east on the Bloor-Danforth line at 759 Pape Avenue. We see students for wisdom tooth consultations and removal, and we bill most student dental plans directly.
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. We use local anesthetic so the area stays numb during the extraction, and you should not feel pain. Some mild soreness and swelling over the next few days are normal and usually settle with over-the-counter pain relief and good aftercare.
A dry socket happens when the blood clot over the extraction site comes loose or breaks down too early, which leaves the bone and nerves exposed. It is more common after a lower wisdom tooth removal and usually appears three to five days later.
Call us. The main sign is a strong, throbbing pain in the jaw, often after the area had started to feel better. The fix is quick. We clean the socket and place a medicated dressing that settles the pain while it heals.
Protect the clot in the first few days. Avoid straws, smoking, spitting, and hard rinsing, since the suction and pressure can pull the clot loose. After the first day, use light salt-water rinses and stick to soft foods.
No. When a wisdom tooth is healthy and easy to clean, we often leave it in place and monitor it. Removal is the better option when the tooth is impacted, crowding other teeth, or causing pain and infection.
They are the last teeth to come in, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Because they appear later than the rest of your teeth, people once linked them with growing wiser, and the name stuck.
Most people feel much better within three to four days, and the area is usually healed enough for normal eating within a week or two. Deeper or impacted extractions can take a little longer.
Stick to soft, cool foods for the first day or two, such as yogurt, smoothies eaten with a spoon, apple sauce, and cooled soup. Add firmer foods back as the area feels comfortable, and chew on the opposite side while it heals.
